European domestic shorthair (slo: evropska domača kratkodlaka mačka)
European domestic shorthair (EDS) is not just an European shorthair, which is a Swedish breed, and is not just a Domestic shorthair, because domestic shorthairs are found all over the world. European domestic cats are also known under the name House cats (HC).
EDS comes in all colours and patterns. Eyes are usually green and yellow, but are not the only EDS's eye colours.
In Slovenia EDS cats are indoor, outdoor, indoor-outdoor cats. Many of outdoor cats are strays, because people are not responsible enough either to neuter their cats or/and to take care of the kittens and find them responsible homes. Many welfare organisations are trying to solve the problem by neutering strays to keep numbers "normal" and to change people's mentality to end miserable EDS's life.
In Slovenia there is a very small percent of purebred cats. They are generally very well taken for. When their kittens are sold, they are usually neutered. So mixing with European domestic shorthair is not highly possible. Especially not in the rural parts of Slovenia, even if majority of cats are in these parts outdoor cats with pretty miserable life, with bad food, no heath care (no vet), short life (just few years), where kittens have kittens, where cats have kittens all the time they can have... they can not mix with purebred cats, because there are close to none there (rural people would never pay for a cat - so they will never have purebred cats). But things are changing, and hopefully not in the direction that irresponsible people would buy purebred cats, because they would destroy EDS, like EDS is destroying the small wildcat (Felis Silvestris) which is still present in Slovenia - the wild cat is disappearing due to mixing with the EDS.
However, here and there purebred cats still mix with EDS cats, but percentage is very small.
With getting aware of the problem of EDS (there is too many of them and not enough good homes), we have nowadays all our cats neutered. Majority are just indoor cats, but some are still indoor-outdoor cats (too high drive to handle). At this point we just wish to have cat-safe fence that all cats could go outside completely safely and that they would be in this way "under control", i.e. that nobody could do any harm to them.
